On August nights, a headless knight is said to ride through the tunnels beneath the castle that gave the world's first Gothic novel its name.

The fortress of Otranto lent its name to Horace Walpole's 1764 novel The Castle of Otranto – world literature's first Gothic horror story. The castle's own ghost is Giulio Antonio Acquaviva, Count of Conversano, who fell fighting the Ottomans in 1480 when a scimitar blow severed his head; according to legend, the headless knight kept riding all the way to Sternatia. On August nights he is said to return, prowling the castle's underground passages and the Punta di Diamante bastion. Visitors have told of a figure on the terrace and sounds like weeping from within the walls.
