Each evening after sunset, the White Lady is said to seek out young lovers in the castle ruin to tell how she was shot by both husband and lover.

The castle ruin above Popoli grew around a Lombard tower in the eleventh century, guarding the mountain passes at Monte Morrone. It is tied to the legend of Duchess Diana Gaetani d'Aragona, married to the Duke of Popoli but in love with the knight Carlo Monaldeschi. When the couple tried to flee one night in 1676 they were surprised by the duke, and in the tumult Diana stepped between the two men's pistols – struck in the head by one and in the heart by the other. After sunset her white-clad ghost is said to wander the ruins seeking a young woman in love to whom she can confide her story, while drops of blood forming a heart allegedly appear on a stone at the base of the tallest tower.
