Gropparello Castle rises above the ravines of the Vezzeno valley in the province of Piacenza. In the 13th century, the lord Pietrone da Cagnano allegedly had his wife Rosania Fulgosio walled up alive as punishment for her tryst with her old flame Lancillotto Anguissola. Rosania is known as 'the woman who screams' - her desperate cries are said to echo through the halls as she seeks contact with the living to have her story told. The castle is open to visitors today with a medieval park and ghost evenings, and a bricked-up cavity in the wall is pointed out as her tomb.
