The marchioness who bled to death after her husband cut off her fingers is said to still drift along the walls of Bosa's castle.
The Malaspina castle of 1112 crowns the Serravalle hill above the colourful riverside town of Bosa on Sardinia's west coast. According to legend, Marquis Malaspina, seized by jealousy and convinced of his wife's infidelity, cut off her fingers and left her to bleed to death; the marquis was punished for the deed, but his wife's spirit never found peace. Her figure is said to walk the ramparts and courtyard at dusk, mourning her innocence. The castle, with its medieval chapel and frescoes, is open to visitors and offers sweeping views over the Temo river and the sea.
