Mombello Abandoned Asylum

Lombardia · Italien · Hospital

In the vast abandoned asylum of Limbiate, a doctor is said to have embalmed patients who were not yet dead.

The Giuseppe Antonini psychiatric hospital at Mombello was once one of Italy's largest, with tens of thousands of square metres of cells and corridors, before being abandoned in 1999. According to a chilling legend, the anatomist Giuseppe Paravicini developed a secret preparation here for mummifying corpses – and allegedly injected it into patients who had not yet died. This is also where Benito Albino Dalser, Mussolini's never-acknowledged son, died forgotten in 1942. Today the ruins are one of the country's most notorious urbex destinations, where visitors report shadow figures, footsteps and voices in the empty pavilions.
