Devil's Bridge

Toscana · Italien · Bridge

The devil is said to have raised this medieval bridge over the Serchio in a single night – in exchange for the first soul to cross it.

The Ponte della Maddalena at Borgo a Mozzano, with its impossibly steep stone hump, was built around the year 1000 for pilgrims heading to Lucca. Legend has it the master builder despaired of ever finishing on time, until the devil appeared and offered to complete the bridge in one night – in exchange for the soul of the first to cross. The bridge stood finished at dawn, but the builder and the village priest tricked the evil one by first driving a pig across. Cheated, the devil hurled himself into the waters of the Serchio, and the striking bridge has been called the Devil's Bridge ever since.
