The street was called Vicus Sceleratus. A chariot is heard racing past that nobody can see, and bloody wheel tracks are said to linger.

The stepped street below Santa Maria Maggiore follows the ancient Vicus Sceleratus, the street of crime. The name comes from Tullia the Younger, who according to Livy had her driver take the chariot straight over the body of her murdered father, King Servius Tullius, at this spot, and came home with blood spattered on her clothes. Romans avoided the street for centuries. Legend says the sound returns: wheels and hooves thundering past in the dark with nothing to be seen, and dark, damp tracks left on the stone afterwards. A later figure belongs to the same stair — Vannozza Cattanei, mother of the Borgia children, whose sorrowful shadow is said to stand on the balcony above, looking down at the street her sons walked.
