Villa Stuart
Rom · Italien · Manor
Emmeline walled her lover into the cellar and left a hole to stroke his fingers — that is where Lord Allen's skeleton was found.
On Monte Mario stands the villa where the English poet Emmeline Stuart-Wortley settled with her lover Lord Allen in the nineteenth century. The couple shocked Roman society twice over: they lived unmarried, and they held spiritualist seances that drew half the aristocracy. Both lost their minds — she said she saw her dead father and sister in the rooms, he said he saw Lucifer on the stairs. One day Lord Allen was simply gone, and only years later were his remains found walled into a cavity in the cellar. Legend says Emmeline had him bricked in rather than lose him, leaving a small hole through which she could reach his fingers. In the nearby Casino degli Spiriti the servants' shapes are said to walk still.
