Rokudō Chinnō-ji stands at the 'crossroads of the six realms', regarded in the Heian period as the very border between the world of the living and the realm of the dead — the Toribeno burial grounds began here. Legend has it that the courtier Ono no Takamura descended into the temple's well every night to assist Enma, the judge of hell, and a second well discovered on neighbouring land in 2011 is held to be his route back. Every August, the people of Kyoto ring the temple's 'welcoming bell' to call their ancestors' spirits home across the boundary. Close by is the sweet shop where, according to legend, a dead mother came at night to buy candy for the child she had borne in her grave — the 'ghost's child-rearing sweets' are sold there still.
