The 1964 Olympic tunnel was cut straight beneath a temple graveyard — ever since, a woman is said to hang upside down from its ceiling.

As Tokyo prepared for the 1964 Olympics there was no time to relocate the old graveyard of Senjū-in temple, so the Sendagaya Tunnel was simply driven beneath the graves, which were exhumed and reburied on top of the tunnel roof. It has carried one of Tokyo's most persistent ghost rumours ever since: a long-haired woman who hangs upside down from the ceiling, drops onto car bonnets and chases vehicles through the tunnel. For decades taxi drivers have told of handprints on the windows and passengers who board by the tunnel and dissolve in the back seat. The tunnel is only 61 metres long — yet it is counted as the capital's eeriest stretch of road.
