The Sennichimae district of Osaka sits on land that in the Edo period held an execution ground, cremation ovens and the vast Sennichi cemetery. On 13 May 1972 the Sennichi Department Store burned: 118 people died, most of them trapped in the seventh-floor cabaret, in Japan's deadliest post-war building fire. The plot has been regarded ever since as the country's most notorious haunted city ground — tales of shadow figures on security cameras, unexplained noises and a restroom kept locked for years have clung to the buildings raised there. The electronics store standing there today is said to have been built only after extensive purification rites, and a small altar for the fire's victims stands by the staff entrance.
