'The village that sank' – beneath the green waters of the crater lake, an entire village is said to rest, drowned by a rejected stranger's curse.
In Dholuo, Simbi Nyaima means 'the village that sank'. Legend tells of a prosperous village that feasted night after night, until one rainy evening an exhausted old woman begged for food and shelter. The chief turned her away – not knowing she was the daughter of a powerful rainmaker. In her fury she caused the whole village, houses and people alike, to sink into the depths, and where it stood the green crater lake lies today. The lake has no visible inlet or outlet, draws flocks of flamingos and is credited with healing powers – but no one fishes its waters.
