Among thousands of ancient stone jars on the Xiangkhouang plateau, the giant king is said to have brewed his victory wine – and the spirits of the dead to linger.

Scattered across the Xiangkhouang plateau stand thousands of huge stone jars, cut more than two thousand years ago by a people no one remembers. Lao legend tells that giants once lived here, and that their king Khun Cheung had the jars carved to brew rice wine after a great victory – the largest jar being the king's own. Archaeologists have instead found human bones: the jars were burial vessels, and by ancient belief the dead journeyed to the next life in stages through them. In the dawn mist between the jars it is easy to see why the area has always been regarded as the land of the dead.
