Drei Schwestern (Three Sisters)

Planken · Liechtenstein · Natural site

Three sisters who picked berries on the Feast of Our Lady and refused the Virgin a handful now stand petrified above the Rhine Valley.

The three jagged peaks of the Drei Schwestern rise above Planken, watching over the whole Rhine Valley. According to Liechtenstein's best-known legend, three sisters climbed the alp to pick berries on the Feast of Our Lady, even as the church bells down in the valley called to mass. A beautiful woman appeared and asked for a few berries for a poor child, but the sisters refused her. The woman — the Virgin Mary herself — then revealed who she was and declared that their hearts were of stone, and that as rocks they would stand petrified forever. The three sisters stand there still, and hikers on the ridge between the peaks say the legend feels unnervingly close in the mist.
