In Panemunė's walled-up dungeons serfs were allegedly left to die – at night owls shriek and the dead are said to laugh from the vaults.

The Renaissance castle of Panemunė above the Nemunas valley, begun in 1604, is wrapped in one of Lithuania's grimmest castle legends. Beneath the castle lay a dark cellar into which peasants who crossed their masters were reportedly thrown; every opening was sealed with stone so the screams never reached beyond the walls. According to stories still told, owls shriek around the castle walls at night, and from the vaults the skulls of the dead peasants are said to laugh. Legend also holds that Grand Duke Vytenis once had his manor on this spot, and that the mounds in the castle park are the graves of him and his wife.
