Countess Yolanda, who defied her family for the convent, is said to still walk the halls of Vianden Castle.

High above the river Our stands the mighty castle of Vianden, built between the 11th and 14th centuries and one of Europe's finest surviving feudal residences. The castle is bound up with the memory of Yolanda of Vianden, the count's daughter who in the 13th century refused the marriage her family had arranged and fled against her father's will to the convent at Marienthal. Her figure is said to wander the castle halls to this day, and visitors have described shapes in medieval dress in the great hall and chapel, whispers on the stairs, and shadows moving where no one walks. The tales have inspired dedicated ghost tours of the castle.
