The vast sanatorium near the village of Ben Smim in the Middle Atlas was built by the French in the 1950s for tuberculosis patients, with pure mountain air as the only cure. Since it closed, the building has decayed into one of Morocco's most feared haunted sites. Visitors tell of stones flying out of empty corridors, doors slamming shut and the feeling of being watched from the gaping rows of windows. Locals believe the building is inhabited by jinn, and few from the area will enter willingly after dark.
