At a quarter to two in the morning on 30 September, Catherine Eddowes was found murdered and mutilated in the southern corner of the square, the only one of the murders that took place within the City's own police district. Barely half an hour earlier she had been released from a police station, where she had been taken to sober up.

There is an older tale claiming that a monk murdered a woman at the priory altar in the 1530s and that the place has been cursed ever since. But be honest about where it comes from: the story was written as a cheap horror novel shortly after the Eddowes murder in 1888, not as old folklore. It is sensation, not tradition.
