Bagan's mightiest temple was built by a king-slayer – and is still said to be haunted by the victims of Narathu's cruelty.

Dhammayangyi, the largest temple in Bagan, was raised in the 1160s by King Narathu, who had seized the throne by murdering his father and brother. Tradition holds that he demanded flawless masonry – if a needle could fit between the bricks, the mason's hand was cut off. Narathu was himself assassinated inside the temple before it was finished, and its inner passages were bricked up for reasons unknown. Visitors tell of moaning sounds from the sealed corridors, and many locals steer clear of the temple after nightfall.
