Mount Popa and Taung Kalat

Mandalayregionen · Myanmar · Natural site

On the volcanic Mount Popa, the blacksmith Maung Tint De and his sister are said to dwell as mighty nat spirits ever since the king had them burned alive.

Mount Popa, with its rock pinnacle Taung Kalat, is home to Myanmar's 37 great nat spirits. Legend tells that the king of Tagaung lured the immensely strong blacksmith Maung Tint De into a trap by marrying his sister, then tied him to a tree and burned him alive – whereupon his sister threw herself into the flames. The siblings became spirits who took up residence on the mountain, where they are venerated to this day as Min Mahagiri and Shwe Myethna. Pilgrims carry offerings up the 777 steps, and wearing red or black or bringing meat is said to provoke the spirits' anger.
