The old Hospital Juárez, formerly Hospital de San Pablo in central Mexico City, gave birth to the country's most famous hospital ghost: La Planchada, 'the ironed one'. According to legend she was Eulalia, a nurse always immaculate in her crisply pressed white uniform, who died of grief after the doctor she was to marry betrayed her. Ever since, patients have described a silent nurse in an old-fashioned, neatly ironed dress administering medicine at night - only for staff to confirm that no such nurse was on duty. The phenomenon is still reported from hospitals across Mexico, but the corridors around the Juárez hospital are considered her home.
