La Malinche (Matlalcueye)

Tlaxcala · Mexiko · Natural site

The lady of the mountain in her blue skirt is said to lure hikers ever deeper into the mist.

The volcano Matlalcueye — 'she of the blue skirt' — rises 4,461 metres above the Tlaxcala highlands and has been revered as a female being since pre-colonial times. Tradition holds that the mountain is home to a powerful female spirit who rules over rain and harvests, but who also takes her due from those who show no respect. Hikers tell of a woman's figure glimpsed in the fog, of weeping heard among the pines and of climbers lured astray on the slopes. To this day, the villages around the mountain leave offerings to stay on good terms with its mistress.
