Through the Black Palace's corridors walks the prisoner Jacinto, who took the blame for his wife's crime and hanged himself when she never came.

Lecumberri, inaugurated in 1900 as Latin America's most modern prison, was soon nicknamed the Black Palace and held some of Mexico's most notorious inmates. Since 1982 it has housed the National Archive, but staff insist the nights are never silent. Best known is the legend of Jacinto, 'El Venado', an innocent man who took the blame for a murder committed by his wife and best friend; she promised to visit every Friday but never came, and he finally hanged himself in the fourth pavilion. Archivists and visitors describe an elegant man in black in the corridors, dragging chains, screams and weeping among the shelves.
