Waardenburg Castle

The Devil dragged Doctor Faust out through the tower window here – and the bloodstains are said to defy every scrubbing.

Kasteel Waardenburg, on the banks of the river Waal, dates back to 1265 and is the setting of the Netherlands' best-known Faust legend. The alchemist Doctor Faust is said to have lived in the tower and struck a pact with the Devil: seven years of service in exchange for his soul. When the contract expired at midnight, Faust was torn through the window amid thunder and screams, dragged straight down to hell, and the bloodstains in the tower room are said to reappear no matter how often they are scrubbed away. To this day, people tell of unexplained noises coming from the tower at night.
