In this lone church tower by the Oosterschelde is said to dwell the mermaid who cursed drowned Koudekerke.

The Plompe Toren is all that remains of the village of Koudekerke on Schouwen-Duiveland: a solitary church tower just inside the sea dike on the Oosterschelde. According to legend, the fishermen of wealthy Westenschouwen caught a mermaid and let her die on the quay, whereupon her husband cursed the land – everything would perish, only the tower would remain standing. The sea swallowed the villages, and the mermaid herself is now said to dwell in the abandoned tower. Long afterwards, French fishermen claimed to have heard church bells ringing underwater at night. The tower is open to visitors, who can hear the legend told on site.
