Dr Holms Hotel, Geilo
Buskerud · Norwegen · Hotel
A sanatorium for the tubercular that became Norway's grandest winter hotel – and the grey lady in the corridor seems not to have noticed the change.
Dr Holms Hotel opened at Geilo in 1909, built by the physician Ingebrigt Christian Holm as a high-mountain sanatorium: dry, cold mountain air was to cure asthma and diseased lungs. It soon became something else – one of the country's most exclusive winter hotels, with royalty and artists in the guest book. But by long-standing tradition the older part of the house has a guest who stayed on. She is called the white, or grey, lady, and is described as a female figure moving through the old corridors. Within the Norwegian hotel trade Dr Holms ranks among the most talked-about haunted houses in the country, alongside Fleischer's at Voss and Union Øye. The contrast is the hotel's own: chandeliers and glittering snow at the windows, in a house once filled with people coughing blood.
