Below the fortress wall lies the execution ground – first the occupiers shot their prisoners here, then Norway shot its traitors on the same spot.

Kristiansten was raised in 1682–84 on the ridge above Trondheim after the great city fire, and its white keep is still the city's landmark. But what weighs on the place is not the cannon: it is the slope just inside the wall. During the Second World War the German occupation used the fortress as an execution site; some thirty Norwegians and an unknown number of people of other nationalities were shot here. After the war the same ground was used for the executions of condemned war criminals, among them the informer Henry Rinnan. The execution site is protected today and marked with a plaque bearing the names of those shot, with a small ecumenically consecrated chapel beside it. Visitors often describe how the noise of the city drops away entirely at exactly that spot.
