By the mills where the Akerselva river is born, Asbjørnsen gathered his 'Mill Legends' — of mills that burned down Christmas night after Christmas night, and of the beings that set them alight.

Where the Akerselva leaves Lake Maridalsvannet at Brekke, mills and sawmills thundered for over 400 years — the last saw fell silent only in 1965. Folklore collector P. Chr. Asbjørnsen wandered here with his fishing rod along the river, and here he let the mill folk tell what became "Kvernsagn" (Mill Legends): stories of mills burning down Christmas night after Christmas night with no natural cause, of troll-folk and huldra maidens dwelling in the spray of the falls who could not abide men's machines, and of what stirred in the darkness of the wheels when the grinding stopped. These legends are among the very first Asbjørnsen published, and a memorial plaque on the river's east bank honours him. On a roaring autumn evening at Brekkefossen, it is still easy to hear what the millers heard.
