The Black Death emptied the valley and the church fell to ruin — yet the sick still came on Christmas night, setting burning candles among the walls to be healed.

At the northern end of Lake Maridalsvannet stand the ruins of St. Margaret's Church, a small 13th-century stone church that gave the whole Maridalen valley its name. Just before the Black Death struck, some 200 people lived in the valley — the plague took nearly all of them, and the abandoned church decayed. Legend tells that it was finally struck by a mighty bolt of lightning and burned. Yet the ruins kept their power: they were held to be holy, and long afterwards the sick and suffering came here on Christmas night itself to place burning candles in the walls and pray for healing. The ruin was restored in 1934, and each summer the Maridal Play is staged between the old walls — where the plague's fate in the valley is still performed on the very spot it happened.
