Oslo Ladegård was built in 1725 by Karen Toller, one of the most powerful women of old Christiania, on top of the ruined medieval Bishop's Castle in the Old Town. She is said to be "the Grey Lady", the figure gliding restlessly through the salons — author Jo Tenfjord even claimed to have negotiated with her when the house faced demolition. In the cellar, where the castle's stone vaults still stand, an older ghost resides: "Pabberten", by legend an abbot of St. Olav's Monastery punished so harshly by his bishop that he hanged himself on Christmas Eve. He has walked at Christmas ever since. As early as 1756, colonel's wife Helene Margrethe Hausmann met a chain-rattling figure here trailed by two small demons — later exposed as a prank, yet the house's reputation never recovered.
