Raniban Forest
Bagmati (Kathmandu) · Nepal · Forest
In the Queen's Forest above Kathmandu a woman is heard weeping among the trees – the echo of a crime that never stopped haunting the place.
Raniban, the Queen's Forest, drapes the hillside at Nagarjun on the edge of Kathmandu and is said to be named after a queen who sought peace here. The forest's dark reputation stems from a tragedy: a young woman is said to have been raped and murdered among the trees, and the perpetrator was later found hanging from one of the ancient giants. Villagers have since told of a woman's crying from the woods at night, figures in the shadows and lights flickering along the trails. Few locals walk through the forest after dark.
