Napier Prison
Hawke's Bay · Nya Zeeland · Prison
In New Zealand's oldest prison, executed murderer Roland Edwards is said to still walk the walls he never left.
Napier Prison was built in 1862 and over its 131 years served as a jail, a psychiatric facility and an orphanage before closing in 1993. In 1889 Roland Herbert Edwards, who had murdered his wife and four children, was hanged here, and his restless spirit is said to be the one most often encountered. Visitors on night tours tell of footsteps and voices from empty cells, doors slamming shut on their own and an oppressive presence near the old execution ground. The prison now operates as a museum offering ghost tours within its whitewashed walls.
