Fort Santiago

Intramuros, Manila · Filippinerna · Fortress

In the fortress dungeons by the Pasig River, screams still echo from prisoners drowned by the rising tide.

Fort Santiago, dating from the late 1500s, guards the entrance to Intramuros and served as a prison under both Spanish colonial rule and the Japanese occupation. In the dungeons – where prisoners are said to have drowned as the river tide rose, and hundreds died during World War II – visitors report screams, whispers and sudden chills. National hero José Rizal was also imprisoned here before his execution in 1896, and some claim to have glimpsed his figure on the grounds. Today the fort is one of Manila's most visited historic sites – beautiful in sunlight, unnerving at dusk.
