Visitors on the light-and-sound tours through Malinta Tunnel report the same things: soldier figures standing at the mouths of the side laterals, moans from the old underground hospital section, cold currents and the sense of being followed through the dark between the lamps.

The tunnel was bored through Corregidor's rock in the 1920s and 30s and housed a headquarters and hospital during the sieges of the Second World War. When the Americans retook the island in 1945, some three thousand trapped Japanese soldiers chose to blow themselves up inside the tunnel system rather than surrender — the charges collapsed parts of the rock. The whole island, scarred with ruins and gun batteries, ranks among the most haunted places in the Philippines.
