In the abandoned hospital at Owińska, where the Nazis murdered every patient in 1939, screams and weeping are said to echo each November.

In Owińska, north of Poznań, an old Cistercian monastery housed a psychiatric hospital for over a century. In the autumn of 1939 the Nazis emptied the institution as part of their euthanasia programme: virtually all patients were murdered, many at Fort VII in Poznań, where gas was used for mass killing for the first time. Ever since, the buildings have been wrapped in chilling accounts – visitors and neighbours report weeping, moans, footsteps and shadows moving along the walls, with the phenomena said to intensify in November, around the anniversary of the murders. Locals even complain that their light bulbs inexplicably burn out every year at that time.
