Royal Castle of Chęciny
Świętokrzyskie · Polen · Castle ruin
On the walls of Chęciny, the white figure of Queen Bona appears in the moonlight – guarding the treasure she never managed to carry out of the country.
The royal castle of Chęciny rises with its three towers above the Świętokrzyskie landscape. Queen Bona Sforza kept part of her wealth here, and legend has it that not everything fit on the treasure wagons when she left Poland in 1556. On moonlit nights her white figure is said to walk the wall-tops, guarding the gold still hidden in the castle rock. Over the years, guards and visitors have reported a woman's silhouette on the walls – the White Lady who has become the castle's emblem.
