In the ruins of Czorsztyn, rebel leader Kostka Napierski and the cruel lord Baranowski are said to walk again – 'when night spreads its wings'.

The ruin of Czorsztyn crowns the Dunajec valley opposite Niedzica. It was here in 1651 that Aleksander Kostka Napierski was captured after leading a peasant uprising and seizing the castle, before the bishop's troops retook it; his tormented spirit is said to linger in the walls. Also haunting the ruin is Jan Baranowski, lord of the castle in 1615–1616, remembered as a tyrant who seized peasants' land and had his opponents thrown onto the rocks below. As early as the 19th century the writer Bogusz Stęczyński noted that when night spreads its wings, spirits and spectres rise from Czorsztyn's walls, especially around the Baranowski tower.
