Here in 1569 King Sigismund Augustus had necromancers summon his dead queen Barbara – a spirit said never to have left the castle.
In January 1569 the Royal Castle in Warsaw hosted one of history's most notorious séances: the inconsolable King Sigismund Augustus had necromancers summon his beloved dead wife, Barbara Radziwiłł. A white female figure appeared – a disguised double, say the sceptics; the queen's spirit, says the legend, and she has never found peace in the castle since. Another White Lady walks here too, the 'private ghost' of the Poniatowski family: President Mościcki reportedly saw her in May 1939, and she was later said to have foretold the outbreak of the Second World War.
