Krupe Castle Ruins

Lubelskie · Polen · Castle ruin

From the empty windows of the Renaissance ruin at Krupe, mournful weeping is said to echo at night – and sometimes a White Lady appears.

The Renaissance castle at Krupe near Krasnystaw was built in the late 16th century by the Arian nobleman Paweł Orzechowski and laid waste during the Swedish Deluge of 1656. It has stood ever since as one of the Lublin region's most evocative ruins. Local legend says that sorrowful weeping and piercing howls can be heard from the empty chambers at night, and that a White Lady sometimes shows herself in the window openings. She is said to have once put a whole troop of lancers to flight when they rode out to the ruin to hunt ghosts.
