When completed in 1644, Krzyżtopór in Ujazd was one of Europe's largest castles, built by the magnate Krzysztof Ossoliński on the logic of the calendar: four towers for the seasons, twelve halls for the months, 365 windows for the days. After the Swedish Deluge the colossus decayed into Poland's most imposing ruin. At night Ossoliński himself is said to ride through the ruins in winged hussar armour, while a headless White Lady stalks the corridors seeking her murderer. Visitors report hoofbeats and shadows between the empty window openings.
