Lipowiec Castle, Babice
Małopolskie · Polen · Castle ruin
At the bishops' old priest-prison of Lipowiec, a phantom carriage is said to arrive by night – and a chained prisoner is dragged towards the executioner's raised sword.
Lipowiec Castle served the bishops of Kraków as a prison for criminal and heretical clergy, with damp cells deep in the tower. Legend has it that a chilling scene replays here at night: a carriage bearing a church dignitary rolls into the courtyard, henchmen drag out a monk in chains, the executioner raises his sword – and at the very moment lightning strikes, the whole vision dissolves. Until the fire of 1800, the ghost of Bishop Zbigniew Oleśnicki was also said to appear in the castle. Visitors still speak of shadows in the windows, footsteps in empty corridors and sudden cold on windless days.
