Reszel Castle

Barbara Zdunk, the last 'witch' burned in Europe, is said to hover above the castle walls of Reszel, limbs bound and eyes full of accusation.

In 1811 Barbara Zdunk was burned at the stake outside Reszel, accused of using sorcery to start the town fire of 1807 – she is often called the last person executed for witchcraft in Europe. At night her figure is said to float above the walls of the bishops' castle, bound hand and foot, her gaze stirring the conscience of the wicked. Some whisper that the apparition is really something demonic merely borrowing her shape. The castle also has a tale of an underground passage from which no one returns – Russian soldiers who ventured down in 1914 were never seen again.
