The sanatorium's patients rarely left again — and when the colossus became a luxury hotel, the stories moved into the corridors with it.

The stories of the former patients' restless spirits came along when the colossus at Penhas da Saúde was rebuilt — they concern the same corridors the hotel guests walk today. Through the decades the building stood abandoned, people told of shadows in the windows and voices in the empty wards, and guests of a nervous disposition still ask what the walls have seen.

The sanatorium opened in 1944 high above Covilhã, where tuberculosis patients were sent to breathe the dry mountain air — the only treatment there was. Many never left again. When antibiotics made the mountain sanatoria redundant the institution closed, and only much later did the building become the elegant pousada it is today.
