On Rua 31 de Janeiro in central Porto stood the Teatro Baquet, engulfed by flames on the night of 21 March 1888 after fire caught the stage curtain. More than a hundred people died in the crush – one of the worst theatre fires in Portuguese history. In the years that followed, locals spoke of knocking on doors and dressing rooms that opened by themselves. The theatre was never rebuilt, but the site has kept its dark reputation among the people of Porto.
