Corvin Castle
Hunedoara · Rumänien · Castle
Water you have, but heart you have not – the curse carved by beheaded Turkish prisoners at the well is said to hang over the castle still.
Corvin Castle in Hunedoara is Transylvania's mightiest Gothic fortress, all drawbridges, towers and a thirty-metre well in its courtyard. Around that well turns the castle's darkest legend: three Turkish prisoners were promised freedom by Iancu de Hunedoara if they found water in the rock. After fifteen years of digging they struck water – but Iancu was dead, and his widow had them beheaded. As a last wish they carved their reproach by the well: water you have, but heart you have not. The prisoners' unquiet spirits are said never to have found peace, and a British Most Haunted television crew claimed contact here with the ghost of a medieval nobleman. Today it is Romania's most visited castle.
