On the ninth of every month at half past eleven at night, the lights of Bucharest's old fire tower are said to switch on by themselves.

The Foișorul de Foc, Bucharest's 42-metre fire-watch tower from 1890, was once the city's tallest structure, where firemen kept round-the-clock watch for smoke above the rooftops. A curiously precise legend clings to it: on the ninth of every month, at 11:30 pm, lights are said to come on in the locked tower with no one inside. Others say it is the spirit of a fireman's wife who climbs the stairs, forever awaiting a husband who never returned from his final call. The tower now houses the firefighters' museum – nocturnal light shows, they insist, are not part of the exhibition.
