Hotel Cișmigiu

București · Rumänien · Hotel

From the lift shaft of the venerable Hotel Cișmigiu, the screams of a student who fell to her death are said to pierce the night.

Hotel Cișmigiu on Bucharest's Elisabeta Boulevard opened in 1912 as one of the city's most elegant hotels, but declined under communism into a student dormitory. That is when tragedy struck: around 1990 a young theatre student fell into the open lift shaft and died only after hours of agony, beyond anyone's reach. Ever since, residents and guests have told of piercing screams rising from the shaft at night, and the elevator ghost became one of Bucharest's best-known modern legends. The hotel has been fully renovated and reopened – but the story of the girl in the lift refuses to die.
