From the never-consecrated monastery ruin on Bucharest's edge, bells are said to toll on full-moon nights – though its bells vanished centuries ago.

The colossal church ruin of Chiajna stands abandoned in the fields on Bucharest's western edge, built in the late 18th century but, by tradition, never consecrated – plague and Turkish raids intervened first. Soon after completion the monastery was devastated, and around 1800 the plague extinguished what life remained. Folk belief holds that a curse rests on the unconsecrated church ever since: visitors swear they have heard bells tolling from the ruin on full-moon nights, though it has had no bells for centuries. With its ten-metre roofless walls, Chiajna is one of Romania's eeriest places.
