Bazilescu Summer Theatre
București (Bucureștii Noi) · Rumänien · Theatre
In the open-air theatre of Bazilescu Park, the founder's spirit is said to announce itself with footsteps, ringing bells and sneezes in the empty auditorium.
Bazilescu Park in northern Bucharest was laid out around the turn of the last century by the lawyer Nicolae Bazilescu, who dreamed of making the Bucureștii Noi district a model town. In the park's summer theatre, once one of the city's great open-air stages, guards and visitors tell of oddities when the auditorium stands empty: footsteps in the aisles, bells ringing, even sneezes from the dark. Local lore says it is Bazilescu himself, unwilling to abandon the park that bears his name. The theatre has stood closed for long stretches – which has only made the night-time sounds more talked about.
