Every year on St. Elijah's Day a woman's shadow is said to appear in Kapetanovo Castle – the mistress who ended her life in flames.

The Polish-style castle on the Banat plain was built in 1904 by grand župan Bela Botka. When the family went bankrupt and the castle was to be lost, his wife could not bear it – she doused herself in petrol and set herself alight. Ever since, locals say the shadow of a fair-haired woman appears in the castle's rooms each year on St. Elijah's Day, the 2nd of August, the anniversary linked to her death. Caretakers and visitors have told of footsteps in empty halls and lights moving behind the windows. The castle stands restored today, but its reputation as Vojvodina's most haunted endures.
